How self-impressioning works

No brute force, no drilling. The tool reads the cylinder mechanically, so it comes down to technique and feel.

1. Match the pick to the cylinder — 7-pin or 8-pin.
2. Insert, then apply light rotational tension. The spring-loaded pins settle onto the bitting on their own.
3. The cylinder turns. Tighten the collar to save the impression and you can reopen that same lock instantly — a good way to study how it was cut.

Yes. Tubular self-impressioning is one of the more approachable disciplines because the spring-loaded pins handle the alignment for you. Pick up an inexpensive tubular practice cylinder alongside it and you will likely get your first open the same day.

What locks is it actually designed for?
Round tubular cylinders, 7-pin and 8-pin. It is not for flat-keyway house locks such as Schlage or Kwikset, not for high-security disc-detainer locks such as Abloy, and not for electronic or smart locks.

Is it legal to own?
In most US states, yes, for locksport, education, and locksmith work. A handful of states regulate possession or professional use, and the rules do change, so check your own state and local law first.

What if I cannot get it to work?
